This is a print of the original artwork 'Ganga Devi'. The painting depicts an interpretation of the Mahabharata an Indian epic which revolves around the dynastic struggle for the throne of Hastinapura between two groups of royal cousins, the Pandavas and the Kauravas.
This painting shows the tale of how Bheeshma the grandfather of the Pandhavas and the Kauravas is born.
We see Ganga Devi, the deity of the Ganga appearing in front of King Shantanu, solemnly resting next to a tree while Ganga, his wife fulfills a curse bestowed on the eight Vasu's. Each of them was cursed by a rishi to live a mortal life on earth. The rishi then said he could not retract this curse but he could relive them of it as soon as they are born. We see Ganga Devi drowning the Vasu's, her babies to return them back to heaven in this painting.
